Product Ingenuity
Since its inception, Kohler has been synonymous with innovation, consistently delivering products that transform homes into havens of comfort and elegance. Our commitment to creating gracious experiences for consumers is matched only by our dedication to sustainability, as we continually develop water-saving solutions that blend seamlessly with our cutting-edge designs.
Early Kohler catalogs highlight water-saving products beginning in 1927 with optional water volume regulators for the shower. The 1933 Integra Toilet came complete with a specifically built water control mechanism and control valve for adjustment to the city’s water pressure. The Niedecken Mixer from 1934 showcased the ability for a “quick” tune in assuring economy of water use and the Exilla-Economizer showerhead launched in 1941 boasting 8 gallons per minute vs. 12 gallons per minute at average city pressure.
Fast forward to the 1950s anti-drip faucet fitting the Valvet is featured in Kohler installations stating, “water flow is smooth, and control is positive”, passing savings on to the consumer due to leaky faucets wasting water.
In the 1970s Conservation begins to take center stage with the Clean Water Act of 1972, strict water savings codes are legislated to conserve water and protect the environment. Kohler introduces a line of Water-saving toilets, kitchen sink and bathroom lavatory faucets and showerheads, a commitment to providing consumers with products that meet and exceed the standards of the time.
The 80s and 90s focus on ecologically friendly products, including the Eco-lite trip lever and Twin Touch Actuator offering flush options at 1.1 GPF or 1.6 GPF and the Wellworth-Lite Toilet, flushes with only 1.6 gallons of water. The Energy Policy Act (EPAct) of 1992 set maximum flow rates and flush volumes for many bathroom fixtures, Kohler experiences the biggest and most complex product and process conversion in the history of the company.
