“Makers in Place: Kohler Celebrates 50 Years of Arts/Industry”
The ‘Makers in Place’ exhibit highlights five decades of Kohler’s Arts/Industry program, showcasing the transformative partnership between art and industry through innovative works featured from Wisconsin to Miami.
Kohler’s Arts/Industry program wraps up its 50th year in 2024 and is widely recognized as one of the most remarkable collaborations between art and industry in the United States. The program, which is run by the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, has provided over 500 artists from around the world the opportunity to access the industrial resources available in Kohler’s factories in Kohler, Wisconsin to create unique pieces of art. This partnership is the subject of the “Makers in Place: Kohler Celebrates 50 Years of Arts/Industry” exhibition – recently featured at the iconic Miami Art Week in December 2024.
Curated by Guggenheim fellow Michelle Grabner, the pop-up display showcases more than 50 examples of the powerful collaboration between artists and industry with pieces by international artists including Ann Agee, Ghada Amer, Lily Cox-Richard, Jack Earl, Joel Otterson, Woody De Othello, Christine, Tarkowski, Tomas Vu, Willie Cole and Theaster Gates, among others. The Arts/Industry program was also highlighted in a Design Miami Design Talk on December 4, and featured in Galerie Magazine’s list of standout moments from the week.
In addition to Miami Art Week, Kohler’s Arts/Industry 50th anniversary has been commemorated through a dynamic array of exhibitions, special residencies, convenings, and celebrations, both at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center and in Kohler, Wisconsin.
